Although the amount of money couples are spending on weddings has steadily risen throughout the past ten years, we noticed a dip in the average dollar amount spent for 2017 weddings. As of Quarter 1, couples were spending 2.8 percent less on their wedding. In 2016, couples were spending an average of 26,720 on the big day and that number has dropped to 25,961 for 2017 weddings.
Most of the spending for big-ticket items remained flat, so the reason for the decline can be attributed to the falling demand for services in the transportation, entertainment, beauty and stationery categories. Couples still seem to be utilizing services in these categories but are looking for alternatives or more affordable options.
Although the overall price has dropped, some products and services have seen an increase in demand and spending. These areas include photography and products and services related to event location, food and rentals.
